FOOTBALL: Bethel’s Castronova, Cumberland’s Campagne earn TSWA weekly awards
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Bethel University’s Sam Castronova and Cumberland University’s Alex Campagne were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association for their efforts in contests from August 21-27. This is the first of weekly awards for the 2017-18 academic year sponsored by the TSWA.

Castronova completed 21-of-32 passes with one touchdown in Bethel’s season-opening 19-13 victory over Edward Waters College. The Buffalo, N.Y., native connected with nine different receivers in the contest and his 22-yard TD pass to Marvin Rudd in the third quarter gave the Wildcats a 16-0 advantage.

Campagne recorded a game-best 11 tackles in Cumberland’s 24-17 season-opening win against Bluefield College. The Crestview, Fla., native tallied four solo stops and one tackle for loss. The Phoenix limited the Rams to just 322 yards of total offense, including 208 in the final three quarters.

– Bryan College’s Brad Spooner earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Soccer Player of the Week accolades, posting three goals in a pair of victories for the Lions. This is the first of weekly awards for the 2017-18 academic year sponsored by the TSWA.

The Norwich, England, native tallied a pair of goals in a 5-1 victory over Bob Jones University, the first unassisted in the 33rd minute and then again in the 65th minute. The sophomore midfielder added an insurance score in the 87th minute in a 3-1 win versus 12th-ranked Thomas University.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Belmont’s Cason garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Belmont University’s Sydney Cason collected a pair of goals in two matches, including a game-winner, to earn the Tennessee Sports Writer’s Association Women’s Soccer weekly honor. This is the first of weekly awards for the 2017-18 academic year sponsored by the TSWA.

The Hendersonville, Tenn., native posted her first collegiate goal in the 77th minute, converting a rebound in the 3-2 win. The freshman midfielder produced another goal with a header in the 80th minute versus Tennessee Wesleyan.

VOLLEYBALL: Austin Peay’s Slay named TSWA Player of the Week
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Austin Peay’s Ashley Slay was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Volleyball Player of the Week, posting back-to-back 20-kill outings. This is the first of weekly awards for the 2016-17 academic year sponsored by the TSWA.

The Nashville, Tenn., native collected 10 kills against UMKC to open the Culvers Governors Classic and followed that with 20 kills versus Marshall. The senior then registered 20 kills with three aces, two blocks and four digs in a 3-2 victory over 19th-ranked Missouri.

Slay added 19 kills against Northern Iowa, finishing with 69, 4.31 per set, in the four matches.
