TSWA recognizes college players of the week - April 7

NASHVILLE – Chattanooga’s Baileigh Pitts and Tusculum University’s Chelsey Stonesifer were named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday by the organization.

Pitts batted .615 (8-for-13) with three walks, one double, one home run and six RBIs in four games for the Mocs. She was 2-for-4 with a double, sacrifice fly and three RBIs in an 8-7 win over Georgia State.

She was 2-for-3 in an 8-0 victory over Mercer with an RBI single in the third and a home run in the fourth. She followed that with a 2-for-4 performance and a walk and one run scored in a 6-5, 10-inning win. In the final game of the weekend, she was 2-for-2 with two walks and one RBI.

Pitts is batting .382 with eight doubles, four homers, 23 RBIs and 20 runs scored in 37 games this season.

Stonesifer posted a 3-0 mark in four appearances, two starts, covering 16.1 innings, allowing three total runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts. She worked seven innings in a win versus Converse College, giving up one run on three hits with four strikeouts. She picked up win in a 4-3 victory in the second game against Converse, pitching one-third of an inning (Tusculum scored the winning run in the bottom of seventh).

Stonesifer tossed seven innings for a win in the first game against Catawba College, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. She also pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the second contest versus Catawba. Stonesifer improved to 13-6 this season with two saves and a 2.06 ERA in 23 appearances, tossing 112.1 innings and giving up only 75 hits with 114 strikeouts.

BASEBALL: Cumberland’s Wilser Then and Trevecca Nazarene’s Logan Harrell were named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Then batted .636 (7-for-11) with four home runs, 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored in four games for the Phoenix. He posted two hits with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored versus Reinhardt University in a midweek contest.

He collected three homers and six RBIs in the series opener against Georgetown College, including a three-run shot in the third inning, a solo homer in the fourth and a two-run home run in the seventh. He added a solo homer in the second game of series and drove in a run and scored once in the series finale.

Then is batting .396 with six doubles, nine homers, 35 RBIs and 36 runs scored in 31 games this season.

Harrell tossed a nine-inning complete game shutout at West Alabama, allowing two hits with no walks and five strikeouts. He faced three batters over the minimum (one reached on an error), using just 80 pitches in a game that lasted just over two hours, a 2-0 TNU victory in series finale. He recorded 11 ground ball and 10 fly ball outs.

Harrell improved to 7-1 with a 2.97 ERA in 10 appearances this season, all starts, covering 60.2 innings, allowing 53 hits with 14 walks and 65 strikeouts. Opponents are batting just .230 against him.
