College players of the week named by TSWA - April 28

NASHVILLE – Trevecca Nazarene’s Addy Grace Summers and Belmont’s Maya Johnson were named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday by the organization.

Summers batted .800 (8-for-10) in three games against Lee University with three multi-hit outings, posting one homer and five RBIs. She recorded three hits with two RBIs in the series opener and added two hits in the second contest. In the series finale she was 3-for-3 with a solo homer and three RBIs.

Summers is hitting .421 with four doubles, 11 RBIs and nine runs scored in 21 games this season.

Johnson posted a 2-0 mark in two outings, tossing 14.0 innings while allowing one earned run with five walks and 27 strikeouts. She struck out 13 and gave up two hits in a complete-game shutout in the first game against Northern Iowa. She recorded 14 strikeouts while allowing seven hits and one earned run in the second outing versus UNI.

Johnson has a 24-2 record in 27 appearances this season with a 0.71 ERA and 331 strikeouts in 177.0 innings this season. She leads the NCAA in strikeouts, strikeouts per seven innings (13.1), strikeout-to-walk ratio (11.03) and ERA and is tied for first in shutouts (12).

BASEBALL: Tennessee’s Blaine Brown and Tegan Kuhns were named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Brown batted .500 (8-for-16) with two doubles, three homers, six RBIs and six runs scored in four games. He posted two hits with a double, one home run, two RBIs and two runs scored against Lipscomb. He doubled and scored a run in the first of a three-game series versus Alabama.

In Friday’s doubleheader sweep of the Crimson Tide, Brown totaled five hits and three runs, including a 3-for-3 performance in the series finale with a pair of homers and four RBIs. All three of his hits in the game drove in runs and his first home run of the contest proved to be the game-deciding hit, as it broke a 3-3 tie and gave Tennessee a lead it would not relinquish.

Brown is hitting .254 with 10 doubles, 12 home runs, 35 RBIs and 36 runs scored in 44 games this season.

Kuhns delivered his best performance of the season, with the sophomore righthander tossing an eight-inning, complete-game shutout to even the Vols' series versus No. 13 Alabama in the first game of a Friday doubleheader. It marked the first complete game of Kuhns' career. He allowed just three hits and one walk while racking up nine strikeouts to earn the win. He set the Crimson Tide down in order five times in eight innings of work.

Kuhns upped his record to 3-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 11 appearances this season covering 59.0 innings, giving up 50 hits with 73 strikeouts and a .221 opponent batting average.
