Lipscomb's Mathews, Union's Martin earn TSWA weekly accolades


MEN’S BASKETBALL: Lipscomb’s Mathews named TSWA award winner
– Lipscomb University’s Garrison Mathews earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades, averaging 29.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in three victories for the Bisons.

The Franklin, Tenn., native hit 26-of-47 from the field overall and 12-for-25 from 3-point range in the three outings. The senior guard also made 23-of-28 at the foul line.

Mathews posted 25 points with five boards against Kennesaw State, connecting on 7-of-14 shots overall and 10-for-13 at the foul line. He recorded 31 points and 10 rebounds versus Florida Gulf Coast, his first double-double of the season, hitting six 3-pointers in a come-from-behind victory. He netted 23 points with four triples in the final 19 minutes of the contest.

Mathews collected 31 points with seven boards and three assists at Stetson to end the week, making 10-of-17 field goals with five more 3-pointers. He recorded 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting in the first half against the Hatters.

It marked the eighth and ninth 30-plus point outings of his career. He has netted 20-plus points in 12 games this season, including eight of the last 10 contests. Mathews is averaging 19.8 point, 5.6 rebounds and 2.0 assist per game this season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Union’s Martin garners TSWA weekly honor
– Union University’s Morgan Martin posted Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, posting a pair of double-doubles while averaging 15.5 points and 12.0 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

The Davenport, Iowa, native netted 15 points with 13 boards along with two assists and two blocks at West Georgia, hitting 7-of-17 field goals in the 49-42 victory. The graduate transfer followed that with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two steals at Shorter University, connecting on 6-of-16 from the field and 4-for-5 at the foul line in a 75-57 win.

Martin averages 16.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per game for Union, 19-1 on the season.
