TSWA honors college players of the week - Oct. 14

NASHVILLE – Tennessee’s DeSean Bishop and Maryville College’s Jacquese Abner were named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday, as announced by the organization.

Bishop rushed for a career-best 146 yards on 14 carries with one touchdown in Tennessee’s 34-31 victory over Arkansas. He averaged 10.4 yards per carry and 64 of his yards came after contact. Bishop posted a 17-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Bishop became the fourth Tennessee running back (QB Joshua Dobbs did it twice) in the last 19 seasons (2007-25) to total 140-plus rushing yards and average 10-plus yards per carry, including the only player to do so in a home SEC contest.

Abner registered two game-changing plays in a 33-13 win against Centre College. He blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt, preserving Maryville’s two-touchdown lead. Minutes later, the senior sealed the victory with a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown, his first career pick-six, to put the game out of reach. Abner added a pass breakup and a tackle in the victory, giving the Scots a 5-0 record this season.

MEN’S SOCCER: King University’s Gavin Roux earned Men’s Soccer Player of the Week accolades, recording 16 saves in two outings for the Tornado. He tallied a career-best 13 saves in a scoreless draw against Converse College and added three more saves versus Francis Marion. Roux has allowed eight goals in eight matches and has 34 saves with three shutouts this season.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: University of Memphis sophomore Ai Kitagawa was named Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, scoring three goals in two matches for the Tigers. She scored in the 70th minute on assists from Ashley Henderson and Mihiro Furuya in a victory against North Texas. Kitagawa collected her first two-goal outing in a 2-1 win versus Florida Atlantic, getting the Tigers on the board in the 47th minute on assists from Elise Perron and Flavie Dube. Perron assisted on the game-winner in the 89th minute by Kitagawa, who has eight goals and three assists in 13 matches this season.

VOLLEYBALL: Middle Tennessee’s Raegan Durbin garnered Volleyball Player of the Week recognition, registering 41 kills, 20 digs and nine service aces in three matches. She posted 10 kills and a career-best five service aces in a midweek contest versus Tennessee State. In the first of two outings against Delaware, she recorded 26 kills, seven digs and three service aces. She followed that with 15 kills and five digs in the second match versus the Blue Hens. Durbin has tallied 226 kills (3.82 per set), 178 digs (2.58 per set) and 28 service aces in 18 matches this season.

College players of the week named by TSWA - Oct. 7

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Tech’s Kekoa Visperas and Chattanooga’s Kamari Todd were named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday, as announced by the organization.

Visperas posted 358 yards passing with four touchdowns and 431 yards of total offense in Tech’s win over Western Illinois. He completed 24-of-38 passes with TD throws of nine, 31, 25 and four yards. The Golden Eagles scored 28 consecutive points in the second and third quarters to break open a close game.

Visperas added 73 yards on the ground, helping Tech to a season-best 618 yards of total offense. He has completed 66 percent of his passes for 1,197 yards, 13 touchdowns and one interception through five games this season.

Todd posted a team-best 14 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss in a 21-14 victory at VMI. The Mocs’ defense limited VMI to just 2-of-12 on third downs and 263 yards of total offense as well as two field goals in the contest (other touchdown came via an interception return).

Chattanooga also posted a goal-line stand in the third quarter, stopping the Keydets three times inside the three-yard line to preserve a 14-3 lead. Todd has recorded 25 tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss in six games this year.

MEN’S SOCCER: Sewanee’s Stokes McConnell scored twice in the second half of Sunday's come-from-behind, 2-1 victory at Millsaps for the Tigers. The junior converted a penalty kick six minutes into the second period after Isaac Rasheed was fouled in the box. Then in the 80th minute, he took a pass from Alpha Bah and buried the game-winner, his sixth goal of the season, all in the last eight matches.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Vanderbilt’s Sydney Watts scored all three of her team’s goals in SEC victories over Auburn and Kentucky. She struck early with the game-winner in the 13th minute versus Auburn, finishing a feed from Olivia Stafford and Maci Teater to give Vanderbilt a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish. She followed that with two goals in a road win at Kentucky, opening the scoring in the 66th minute with an unassisted strike. Watts then delivered the game-winner eight minutes later, finishing off a setup from Stafford. She leads the Commodores with nine goals on the season, matching her 2024 total.

VOLLEYBALL: Trevecca Nazarene’s Addison Cunnagin posted two double-doubles in three victories for the Trojans. She registered 14 kills and 13 digs against Mississippi College, hitting .429, and collected 14 kills with four service aces and two blocks versus Lee University. She added 10 kills and 11 digs against West Alabama and leads the Gulf South Conference in league matches in hitting percentage, kills per set, aces per set and points. Trevecca has posted a 12-3 overall record, 6-0 in GSC play, the best volleyball start in the NCAA Division II era (since 2013).
