Mays, Wykle earn TSWA weekly recognition

MEN’S BASKETBALL: King’s Mays earns TSWA Player of the Week honors
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– King University’s Michael Mays was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, scoring 30 points with seven rebounds in the team’s only contest of the week.

The Bristol, Tenn., native hit 9-of-19 shots overall, 4-for-11 from 3-point range, and made all eight free throws in an 87-78 victory at North Greenville. The seven rebounds marked a new season-high while it was the 13th time this season he has scored in double figures and the second time this year he has scored 30 or more points.

Mays is averaging 22.5 points and 3.7 rebounds per outing in 15 games this season for the Tornado.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Carson-Newman’s Wykle earns TSWA Player of the Week accolade
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Carson-Newman’s Braelyn Wykle was voted the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, averaging 29.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two wins for the Eagles.

The Greeneville, Tenn., native posted a career-high 39 points in an 83-81 victory over Tusculum University, connecting on 15-of-28 shots from the field, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 at the foul line. She added seven boards and two assists for the Eagles.

The junior guard followed that with 20 points and three rebounds in a win at Newberry, mazking 8-of-21 from the field with four more triples. It marked the 50th contest with 20 or more points in her Carson-Newman career.

Wykle is averaging 19.4 points along with 3.7 boards and 2.1 assists per game through 17 contests this season.

Horston, Smallwood named TSWA players of the week

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Tennessee’s Horston earns TSWA Player of the Week accolade
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tennessee’s Jordan Horston was voted the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, recording 20.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists in two victories for the Lady Vols.

The Columbus, Ohio, native made 11-of-21 shots overall and 5-for-5 at the foul line, finishing with 27 points, 14 boards and five assists in a home victory over Mississippi State. The senior guard followed that with 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in a road win at Vanderbilt, becoming only the fourth player in Lady Vols history to amass 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists in a career (Kara Lawson, Alexis Hornbuckle, Dena Head).

Jackson is averaging 15.8 points along with 6.8 boards and 3.7 assists per game through 17 contests this season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Trevecca’s Smallwood earns TSWA Player of the Week honors
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Trevecca University’s Elon Smallwood was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, posting 25.0 points in two outings for the Trojans.

The Brentwood, Tenn., native hit 12-of-17 shots overall 5-for-7 from 3-point range in a three-point loss to Lake Erie, adding two rebounds, two assists and one steal. The senior netted 18 points, four rebounds and two assists against Walsh College, making 6-of-17 from the field with three more triples.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Tennessee’s Jackson earns TSWA Player of the Week accolade
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tennessee’s Rickea Jackson was voted the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, posting 25.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in two victories for the Lady Vols.

The Detroit, Mich., native made 10-of-13 from the field and 8-for-9 at the foul line at Florida, finishing with 28 points and nine boards in 25 minutes off the bench. The senior forward connected on 10-of-14 shots and recorded 22 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in 27 minutes off the bench versus Alabama.

Jackson is averaging a team-leading 17.4 rebounds along with 5.8 boards per game through 14 contests this season.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Union University’s Tylandrius Parks was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, averaging 23.5 and 8.0 rebounds in two games for the Bulldogs.

The Pocahontas, Tenn., native hit 9-of-17 shots overall with a pair of 3-pointers and was 9-for-11 at the foul line, recording 29 points with eight boards at West Alabama. The senior guard followed that with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists at Alabama-Huntsville, making 5-of-10 from the field and 7-for-10 at the charity stripe.

Parks has scored 20-plus points seven times this year and averages 20.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists through 13 games this season.
