Austin Peay's Taylor, King's West earn TSWA weekly honors

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Austin Peay’s Taylor named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Austin Peay’s Terry Taylor earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades Tuesday, registering a double-double, including a career-best 32 points, in a victory against Purdue-Fort Wayne.
The Bowling Green, Ky., native made 14-of-22 shots overall, netting 18 points in the first half and 14 in the second. The sophomore forward grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out a career-best five assists for his fifth double-double of the year in 10 outings.

Taylor is averaging 17.3 points and 9.3 rebounds this year for the Govs.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: King’s West garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– King University’s Kori West posted Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors Tuesday, averaging 15.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks in two games for the Tornado.

The Shelby, N.C., native recorded 11 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and five blocks in a six-point loss to Carson-Newman. The junior connected on 5-of-12 shots overall and collected her fifth double-double of the year.

West followed that with 19 points, 12 boards and three blocks at Newberry College, as the Tornado handed the Wolves their first loss of the season. She made 8-of-17 shots from the field and ran her double-double streak to five straight.

West is averaging 15.8 points, 12.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game this season.

Tennessee's Schofield, Westbrook earn TSWA weekly awards

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Tennessee’s Schofield named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tennessee’s Admiral Schofield earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades Tuesday, netting 30 points with six rebounds in a 76-73 victory against top-ranked Gonzaga.

The Zion, Ill., native made a career-best six 3-pointers in the contest. The senior recorded 25 points in the second half on 10-of-17 shooting with five triples. He scored the final 11 points of the game for the Vols with three 3-pointers, as Tennessee overcame a nine-point deficit in the final six minutes to post the win.

Schofield posts 17.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while handing out 25 assists and leading the club in 3-pointers made this season (19) through eight games.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Tennessee’s Westbrook garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tennessee’s Evina Westbrook posted Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors Tuesday, averaging 21.5 points, 5.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in a pair of wins for the Lady Vols.

The Salem, Ore., native registered 20 points with four assists, three rebounds and two steals in a home win against Stetson, hitting all nine attempts at the foul line. She netted 14 points during the third quarter, helping UT turn a 20-point deficit into a two-point lead.

The sophomore made 8-of-15 shots from the floor with three 3-pointers, adding six assists and three rebounds in a victory over Texas. It marked her fourth consecutive 20-point outing and the Lady Vols won in Austin for the first time since 2012.

Westbrook posted nine of her 23 points during the second quarter, again helping her club erase an early deficit and take a 40-35 lead at the half. She is averaging 16.6 points, 4.8 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game this season for Tennessee.

APSU's Porter-Bunton, Maryville's Varney earn TSWA weekly honors

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Austin Peay’s Porter-Bunton named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Austin Peay’s Chris Porter-Bunton earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades Tuesday, registering 16.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in a pair of road victories for the Govs.

The Bowling Green, Ky., native posted 16 points and 15 rebounds in an overtime victory at Troy. The senior forward made a layup and then gathered a steal and an assist for another basket before hitting two free throws, helping force overtime against the Trojans. APSU secured its first true non-conference road victory since 2015.

Porter-Bunton followed that with 16 points and five boards at Alabama A&M, making all six shot attempts versus the Bulldogs. He made 12-of-20 shots overall in the two outings and is averaging 12.0 points and 5.8 rebounds through eight contests.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Maryville’s Varney garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Maryville College’s Klaire Varney posted Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors Tuesday, averaging 22.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 5.0 steals in two games for the Scots.

The Crossville, Tenn., native netted 23 points with nine rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes versus Huntingdon College. She made 9-of-12 at the foul line in the contest while shooting 7-for-18 overall against the Hawks.

The sophomore guard connected on 8-of-16 shots and finished with 21 points, six boards, six assists and eight steals (career-high) in a victory over LaGrange College.

Varney is averaging 16.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.8 steals per game, leading the club in points, assists and steals through six games.

Tennessee's Williams, Davis garner TSWA Player of the Week accolades

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Tennessee’s Williams named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tennessee’s Grant Williams earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades Tuesday, averaging 21.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a pair of games for the Vols.

The Charlotte, N.C., native recorded 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting with nine boards, four assists and three blocks against Louisville in the NIT Season Tip-Off. The junior made 6-of-9 at the foul line in the 92-81 victory.

He finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals in an overtime loss against second-ranked Kansas, connecting on 6-of-13 field goals with one 3-pointer and making 5-for-6 at the charity stripe.

Williams leads the SEC with 21.6 points per game while ranking second in field goal percentage (.597), fourth in rebounding (8.4) and eighth in assists (4.2).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Tennessee’s Davis garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tennessee’s Rennia Davis posted Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors Tuesday, earning MVP honors at the Junkanoo Jam while averaging 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in two wins for the Lady Vols.

The Jacksonville, Fla., native collected 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and four steals in a victory over Clemson, hitting 6-of-13 field goals overall in 26 minutes of action.

The sophomore made three consecutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, helping UT outscore UAB, 19-9, in the period to force overtime in a win against the Blazers in the championship game. She finished with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, adding seven boards and three assists, keeping the Lady Vols undefeated.

Davis is averaging 13.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game this season for Tennessee.
