TSWA recognizes college players of the Week - Oct. 16

FOOTBALL: Tennessee’s Guarantano, Vanderbilt’s Griffin earn TSWA weekly awards
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tennessee’s Jarrett Guarantano and Vanderbilt’s Jordan Griffin were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association for their efforts in contests from October 8-14.

Guarantano completed 21-of-32 passes for 328 yards and two touchdowns in Tennessee’s 30-24 victory at Auburn. The Lodi, N.J., native tallied career-bests in attempts, completions and yards and did not commit a turnover in the win. He tossed touchdown passes of 42 yards to Ty Chandler and 25 yards to Jauan Jennings.

He has thrown for 1,129 yards on 80-of-125 passing with six touchdowns and two interceptions through six games. His 64.0 completion percentage ranks fifth in the SEC.

Griffin registered 18 tackles with one pass break-up for the Commodores against Florida. The Tampa, Fla., native netted 10 solo stops versus the Gators, including eight solo tackles and 13 total stops in the first half when Vanderbilt held UF to just 13 points. He added a pass break-up in the third quarter.

The senior has 68 tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, two pass break-ups, one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry in seven games this season.

MEN’S SOCCER: Cumberland’s Williams named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Cumberland University’s Daniel Williams earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Soccer Player of the Week accolades, netting two goals and one assist for the Phoenix in two outings.

The London, England, native posted two goals and one assist in a victory at Georgetown College. The senior scored in the 28th minute on an assist from Bakary Bagayoko and the two switched roles just 26 seconds later, with Williams providing the helper for a Bakayoko score.

Williams collected his second goal of the match unassisted in the 51st minute and has five goals and five assists in 11 outings this season.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: UT Martin’s McGivern garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– UT Martin’s Amy McGivern posted Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors, recording five goals with a hat trick in two victories for the Skyhawks.

The Drumaness, Northern Ireland, native netted both goals in a 2-0 victory against Belmont, scoring at the 60-minute mark on an assist from Nicole Collins and again in the 81st minute unassisted. The senior registered a hat trick versus Austin Peay, collecting the final three goals in the match for UTM.

She poked in a rebound in the 17th minute and got an assist from Alice Adams for a goal in the 54th minute. McGivern converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute, giving her 11 goals and one assist in 13 matches this season.

VOLLEYBALL: Memphis’ Flowers named TSWA Player of the Week
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– University of Memphis sophomore Hannah Flowers was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Volleyball Player of the Week, registering a pair of double-doubles in two wins for the Tigers.

The Wildwood, Mo., native collected 18 kills and 13 digs in a 3-1 victory against Houston, setting a career-high in digs. She then posted a career-best 20 kills along with 10 digs and six blocks in a five-set win versus SMU, tying her career mark for blocks as well.

Flowers recorded her fifth and sixth double-doubles of the season and her 15th and 16th double-figure kill outings this year in the two matches. She also moved past the 500-kill mark for her career in Sunday’s match. She leads the Tigers with 253 kills, 3.56 per set, and ranks third in digs with 133, 1.87 per set, while ranking second in blocks with 53.

FOOTBALL: Middle Tennessee’s Stockstill, Moffatt earn TSWA weekly awards
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Middle Tennessee’s Brent Stockstill and Jovante Moffatt were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association for their efforts in contests from October 1-7.

Stockstill completed 25-of-40 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns while running for an additional 31 yards and a score in a 34-17 victory at Marshall, the first in program history in Huntington. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native was 11-for-15 passing for 101 yards and one TD in the third quarter alone, helping the Blue Raiders erase a halftime deficit and take the lead for good.

The redshirt senior also topped the 10,000-yard mark in the win, becoming one of just nine C-USA quarterbacks to achieve the feat and one of 24 in NCAA history. It marked his 16th career 300-yard passing game. Stockstill has completed 67 percent of his throws for 1,299 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions through five games this season.

Moffatt posted a career-best 17 tackles with a forced fumble and two pass breakups in just his second game of the season in the win at Marshall. The Union City, Tenn., native recorded six solo stops and his forced fumble in the second quarter set-up a field goal that tied the game at 10.

The senior safety was part of a Blue Raider defense that limited the Thundering Herd to 149 total yards and seven points in the second half, as Middle Tennessee erased a 17-10 halftime deficit. Moffatt has 25 tackles with one interception and three pass breakups this year.

MEN’S SOCCER: King’s Delisle named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– King University’s Ben Delisle earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Soccer Player of the Week accolades, collecting three goals with one game-winner in two matches for the Tornado.

The Montreal, Quebec, native netted the game-winner in a 2-1 win against North Greeneville, scoring in the 41st minute on an assist from Jairo Ruiz Caram.

The sophomore added two goals against the University of Mount Olive, scoring the club’s first goal in the 11th minute on an assist from Carlos Saavedra. He added an unassisted score in the 28th minute, as the Tornado scored three times in the first 30 minutes en route to a 4-1 victory. Delisle has a team-leading five goals this season for King.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Maryville’s Reagan garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Maryville College’s Shannon Reagan posted Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors, netting two goals with one assist in two outings for the Scots.

The Tullahoma, Tenn., native registered two goals and one assist in a victory at Wesleyan College. The junior netted the game-winner in the 14th minute and posted her second goal of the match just six minutes later. She also assisted on a Lexie Hill score in the 52nd minute.

Reagan ranks second on the club with five goals and leads the Scots with four assists this season.

VOLLEYBALL: Maryville’s Sidner named TSWA Player of the Week
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Maryville College’s Brianne Sidner was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Volleyball Player of the Week, registering a pair of double-doubles in three matches for the Scots.

The Marietta, Ga., native posted 17 kills and a career-high 20 digs in a four-set loss at Birmingham Southern, adding two blocks. The junior followed that with 11 kills and 14 digs in a five-set win over Huntingdon College for her fifth double-double of the year.

Sidner ended the week with six kills, 14 digs and two blocks in a sweep against Piedmont College. She averaged 11.33 kills and 16.0 digs per match during the week. Sidner has a team-leading 162 kills (2.70 per set) and 24 service aces along with 163 digs (2.72 per set) and 21 total blocks this season.

FOOTBALL: Tennessee Tech’s Fisher, Carson-Newman’s Coats earn TSWA weekly awards
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tennessee Tech’s Bailey Fisher and Carson-Newman’s Temoris Coats were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association for their efforts in contests from September 24-30.

Fisher completed 27-of-41 passes for 383 yards and four touchdowns against Eastern Illinois. The Tiger, Ga., native threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the Eagles. The 383 yards is the fifth-best single-game passing goal in school history and the most by a true freshman.

Fisher has thrown for 836 yards and six touchdowns in five games this season for TTU.

Coats earned his third TSWA honor this year and second in as many weeks, collecting nine tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss along with an interception for the Eagles. The Greenwood, S.C., native tallied the third most tackles for loss in a single game in program history.

He registered 3.5 tackles for loss in the first half against Catawba College and his interception in the third quarter came with Catawba ahead, 21-20. Coats added a pass breakup and made two other tackles for no gain in the contest, a 33-30 Carson-Newman victory. He has 52 tackles with 10.5 tackles for loss in five games this season.

MEN’S SOCCER: Tennessee Wesleyan’s Baggaley named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tennessee Wesleyan’s Harry Baggaley earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Soccer Player of the Week accolades, posting a hat trick in a conference victory for the Bulldogs.

The Trent, England, native got Wesleyan on the board with an unassisted goal in the 16th minute. The freshman broke open a 2-0 match with a pair of goals in the second half, scoring in the 64th and 76th minutes for his first career hat trick and the sixth match this season with two or more goals.

Baggaley leads the NAIA in goals with 17 this season, scoring in all 10 matches for the Bulldogs, and also ranks first in game-winning goals (4) and points (35).

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Maryville’s Sipos garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Maryville College’s Bailey Sipos posted Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors, scoring four goals with two assists in three matches for the Scots.

The Knoxville, Tenn., native posted her fourth collegiate hat trick and second this season at Huntingdon College. The sophomore scored unassisted in the third minute and netted her second goal of the match in the sixth minute on an assist from Lexie Hill. She finished the hat trick with an unassisted score in the 62nd minute.

Sipos added a goal and two assists at Agnes Scott, notching her 10th goal of the year in the 12th minute on an assist from Shannon Reagan, evening the match at one. She added assists to Hill in the 17th minute and Zoe Van Hook in the 89th minute. Sipos has 10 goals and two assists in 10 matches this season.

VOLLEYBALL: Lipscomb’s Nusbaum named TSWA Player of the Week
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Lipscomb University’s Carlyle Nusbaum was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Volleyball Player of the Week, recording 39 kills and 29 digs with a pair of double-doubles in two matches for the Bisons.

The Overland Park, Kan., native tallied a season-high 23 kills along with a season-best 17 kills, adding a career-high six blocks in a 3-1 victory against North Florida. The senior posted 16 kills and 12 digs in a sweep over Stetson, her eighth double-double of the season and fourth straight, all against Atlantic Sun Conference competition.

She leads the A-SUN in kills per set (4.41) and has 238 kills for the season, one behind the conference leader in total kills.

FOOTBALL: Memphis’ Henderson, Carson-Newman’s Coats earn TSWA weekly awards
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– University of Memphis running back Darrell Henderson and Carson-Newman’s Temoris Coats were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association for their efforts in contests from September 17-23.

Henderson rushed for 188 yards on 22 carries, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the Tigers’ win over South Alabama. The Batesville, Miss., native leads FBS in all-purpose yards per game (225.75), yards per carry (12.22), total rushing yards (709) and rushing yards per game (177.3) through four contests for UM, including a pair of 200-yard outings. The junior added two catches for 34 yards against the Jaguars.

Coats posted a career-high 13 tackles with 1.0 tackles for loss for Carson-Newman at Newberry College. The Greenwood, S.C., native recorded five solo stops and made five tackles in the third quarter and four in the first period. The Eagles defense limited Newberry to just 299 yards of total offense and one offensive touchdown in a 23-3 loss.

Coats leads the club with 43 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks through four games this season.

MEN’S SOCCER: Carson-Newman’s Karlsen named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Carson-Newman’s Tobias Karlsen earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Soccer Player of the Week accolades, registering four goals with a hat trick in two matches for the Eagles.

The Kongsvinger, Norway, native netted the game-winner in the 60th minute in a 3-2 victory at Lincoln Memorial on an assist from Jonny Le Quesne. The junior posted his third career hat trick against Coker College, scoring in the fifth, 23rd and 32nd minutes to put the Eagles ahead, 3-0, in a 4-1 win.

Karlsen has six goals this season for Carson-Newman.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Carson-Newman’s Mosengo garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Carson-Newman’s Magda Mosengo netted five goals with one assist in a pair of matches for the Eagles, earning the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Soccer weekly honor.

The London, England, native scored just 71 seconds into the match at Lincoln Memorial and put Carson-Newman ahead, 4-2, with another goal in the 62nd minute. The senior netted three goals with an assist versus Coker College, scoring twice in 36 seconds in the 54th minute to help the Eagles break open what was a 1-0 lead at the half.

Mosengo assisted on a Holly Talbut-Smith score in the 55th minute and posted her final goal in the 62nd minute. She has eight goals and three assists in seven matches this season.

VOLLEYBALL: Maryville’s Sidner named TSWA Player of the Week
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Maryville College’s Brianne Sidner was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Volleyball Player of the Week, registering 57 kills, 42 digs and 10 service aces in five matches for the Scots.

The Marietta, Ga., native collected nine kills and 15 digs in a five-set loss at Covenant College and recorded 14 kills, nine digs and three service aces versus Johnson University.

The junior outside hitter added 18 kills, seven digs and two aces at Guilford College and finished the week with 12 kills, eight digs, three aces and two block assists in a five-set win at Emory & Henry. Sidner leads the Scots with 111 kills (2.71 per set) and has 98 digs (2.39 per set), 19 service aces and 15 total blocks this season.

FOOTBALL: Tusculum’s Shippy, Carson-Newman’s Houston earn TSWA weekly awards
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Tusculum University’s Jordon Shippy and Carson-Newman’s Alonzo Houston were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association for their efforts in contests from September 10-16.

Shippy rushed for a school single-game record 258 yards in a victory against Limestone College. The Gaffney, S.C., native carried 35 times and scored on touchdown runs of five, three and seven yards. He added four rushes of 20-plus yards and caught one pass for 21 yards, finishing the contest with 279 all-purpose yards in the 37-10 victory.

Houston posted nine tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss and one interception in Carson-Newman’s 31-14 win over Wingate University. The freshman from Wimauma, Fla., helped the Eagles force six three-and-outs and two interceptions during an eight possession stretch for Wingate in the contest, limiting the Bulldogs to 65 rushing yards and 312 yards of total offense.

Houston collected five solo stops and registered an interception in the second quarter.

MEN’S SOCCER: Maryville’s Vinyard named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Maryville College’s Austin Vinyard earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Soccer Player of the Week accolades, collecting a hat trick in record-setting time for the Scots.

The Oak Ridge, Tenn., native scored three goals in three minutes and eight seconds against Berea College, the ninth-fastest hat trick in NCAA Division III history. The sophomore forward scored at 46:27, 48:38 and 49:35, breaking open a scoreless match versus the Mountaineers.

Kai Miettinen assisted on the first goal and Vinyard and Randy Reichenberger combined for the second score before Vinyard netted the third goal unassisted. He has four goals this season for the Scots.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Cumberland’s Holloway garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Cumberland University’s Rebecca Holloway netted four goals with two assists in a pair of matches for the Phoenix, earning the Tennessee Sports Writer’s Association Women’s Soccer weekly honor.

The Bristol, England, native did all of her damage in one contest at Asbury University, scoring just 88 seconds into the match and adding an assist on a Haley Stevens goal in the 18th minute.

The CU senior scored again in the 23rd minute, drilled the crossbar in the 35th minute and tallied her third goal of the first half in the 38th minute. She posted her final goal of the match in the 73rd minute and assisted on an Emma Campbell score in the 81st minute. Holloway has 13 goals and four assists in eight matches this season.
