Cumberland’s Antonelli, Trevecca’s Carr named TSWA softball award winners

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –Cumberland University’s Brigid Antonelli and Trevecca University’s Savannah Carr were named the Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association on Tuesday for their performances for games March 19-25.

Antonelli batted .364 (8-for-22) with six RBIs and seven runs scored in six games for the Phoenix. The Redondo Beach, Calif., native posted two hits in both ends of a doubleheader versus Bryan College, scoring three runs and driving in another in the sweep for CU.

The junior singled, walked twice, scored three times and drove in a run in the first of two doubleheaders at Shawnee State. She singled twice, drove in four runs and scored once in the third contest against the Bears and singled in the finale versus SSU.

Antonelli is batting .354 with four doubles, one home run, 19 RBIs and 21 runs scored in 29 contests this season for Cumberland.

Carr tossed 10.0 innings over two appearances for the Trojans, allowing one run on six hits with nine strikeouts. The Springfield, Tenn., native worked three innings of relief against Hillsdale College, giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

The junior righthander tossed a complete-game shutout versus the Chargers, allowing four hits with six strikeouts in a 5-0 victory. Carr is 6-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 11 appearances this season covering 35.1 innings, striking out 23. Opponents are batting .220 against her.

BASEBALL: Union’s Lewis, Vanderbilt’s Hickman garner TSWA accolades
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Union University’s Hayden Lewis and Vanderbilt’s Mason Hickman were named the Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association on Tuesday for their performances for games March 19-25.

Lewis batted .500 (7-for-14) with one double, two triples, one home run, five RBIs and four runs scored in four games for the Bulldogs. The Jackson, Tenn., native doubled, drove in three runs and scored once in a mid-week contest at Trevecca University.

The senior outfielder doubled in the first of a doubleheader at Valdosta State and added a single in the second contest versus the Blazers. In the series finale Lewis was 4-for-4 with two triples, a solo homer and three RBIs. He is batting .281 with five doubles, five triples, two home runs, 15 RBIs and 16 runs scored in 27 games this season.

Hickman tossed a two-hit shutout in the series finale against LSU, walking two and striking out nine in seven innings in a 1-0 victory for the Commodores. The Hendersonville, Tenn., native did not allow a hit after the second inning, retiring 16 of the final 18 batters he faced, including 12 straight at one point.

The freshman righthander improved to 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA in six appearances this season, striking out 28 in 26.0 innings of work. He has issued just nine walks and opponents have a .180 batting average against him.

Each Division I team features 15 players from Classes A, AA, AAA and 10 players on the teams in Division II-A and DII-AA. Baseball, softball Player of the Week honors awarded by TSWA

BASEBALL: Bryan’s Scoggins, Tennessee’s Hunley garner TSWA accolades
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Bryan College’s David Scoggins and Tennessee’s Sean Hunley were named the Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association on Tuesday for their performances for games March 12-18.

Scoggins collected six hits in eight official at-bats in a three-game series against St. Andrews University, posting two doubles, three home runs, 12 RBIs and seven runs scored. The Marietta, Ga., native hit a two-run homer, added a double and drove in five runs in the first game versus the Knights.

The sophomore registered a two-run homer in the second contest and doubled, homered, drove in five runs and scored twice in the final game of the series as well. Scoggins is batting .370 with three doubles, six home runs, 17 RBIs and 11 runs scored in 16 starts this season for Bryan.

Hunley tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts in a 5-0 win versus Western Carolina. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native retired 12 of the first 14 batters of the game before a pair of singles in the fifth inning, but a line drive doubleplay erased the WCU threat.

Another twin-killing helped erase a baserunner in the eighth for Hunley, who extended his scoreless innings streak to 20.2. The righthander improved to 3-0 for the season with a 0.75 ERA this season with 12 strikeouts in 24.0 innings of work.

SOFTBALL: Maryville’s Strambler, Cumberland’s Caplinger named TSWA award winners
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Maryville College’s Essence Strambler and Cumberland’s Kayley Caplinger were named the Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association on Tuesday for their performances for games March 12-18.

Strambler batted .471 (8-for-17) with two doubles, two home runs and 14 RBIs as well as six runs scored over six games for the Scots. The Freeport, Texas, native posted an RBI single and a three-run homer in the first of two games versus LaGrange College and added a double and a two-run shot in the second contest against the Panthers.

The sophomore outfielder drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and a groundout in the first game of a doubleheader at Covenant College and collected another sac fly and an RBI single in the second contest versus the Scots. Strambler posted a two-run single along with a double and three runs scored in the first of two games at Berea College and registered a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the second contest against the Mountaineers.

Strambler is batting .449 with two doubles, five home runs, 28 RBIs and 17 runs scored in 22 games this season for Maryville.

Caplinger posted a 3-0 mark with a 0.39 ERA, scattering 14 hits over 18.0 innings while allowing just one run. The Auburntown, Tenn., native tossed five innings versus Bethel University, giving up one run on five hits with no walks and one strikeout.

The freshman righthander then pitched a four-hit shutout against Stillman College, striking out five while allowing four hits in a 2-0 victory. The next day she worked six scoreless frames versus the Tigers, giving up five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Caplinger holds a 9-1 mark with a 1.42 ERA in 11 starts covering 59.0 innings with 31 strikeouts and a .227 opponent batting average.
