Lipscomb's Mathews, Union's Shumpert named TSWA Players of the Week

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Lipscomb’s Mathews named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Lipscomb’s Garrison Mathews earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, posting 35.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in a pair of contests, including a school single-game record 43 points at Kennesaw State.

The Franklin, Tenn., native recorded 28 points with five 3-pointers against Fisk University, hitting 9-of-15 shots overall in just 22 minutes in the nonconference victory. The junior guard then posted a school single-game record 43 points in the conference opener at Kennesaw State, connecting on 12-of-20 shots overall with four triples. He made 15-of-17 at the foul line as well, adding 13 rebounds with three assists.

Mathews is averaging 22.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in 16 games this season for Lipscomb.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Union’s Shumpert garners TSWA weekly honor
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Union University’s Chelsey Shumpert earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades on Tuesday, averaging 23.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.5 steals in a pair of victories for the Bulldogs.

The Paducah, Ky., native netted 16 points and six boards with a pair of 3-pointers versus Auburn Montgomery. The senior guard made 11-of-25 shots overall with three 3-pointers, posting 31 points, eight rebounds and seven steals in a victory at North Alabama. She has 12 games this season with 20-plus points and five with 30-plus in 14 outings.

Shumpert is averaging 25.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game this season for Union.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Austin Peay’s Ugba named TSWA award winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Austin Peay’s Averyl Ugba earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors on Wednesday, posting 19.0 points and 10.5 rebounds with a pair of double-doubles in two wins for the Govs.

The Silver Spring, Md., native scored 13 of his 15 first-half points in a 28-9 run, including eight straight to begin the spurt en route to a career-best 21 points at SIU Edwardsville. He made 9-of-16 shots overall and added 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

The senior forward followed that with 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting with 11 boards at Eastern Illinois. Ugba is averaging 12.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this season for Austin Peay.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– Belmont’s Sally McCabe earned Tennessee Sports Writer’s Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades on Wednesday, averaging 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds with one double-double in a pair of victories for the Bruins.

The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native scored a season-best 22 points, connecting on 10-of-16 shots with six rebounds and three blocks at Southeast Missouri. She tied her career-high with the 10 field goals made in the contest.

The senior netted 18 points with 12 boards at UT Martin, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and making 7-of-14 shots overall. It marked her second double-double of the season and 20th of her career.

McCabe is averaging 15.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game this season for the Bruins.
